Crank Bros 5050XX Pedal

SR Review Logo

This flat pedal offering from Crank Bros is to my eyes one of the nicest looking flat pedals out there. Well I think so anyway. Add to this the multitude of colour options, and you have a pedal made in heaven for vain, colour conscious people like myself. Yes, if you can’t ride good, you may as well look the part.

The XX version differs from the standard version in that it allows grease to be pumped into the bearings without pulling the pedals apart. Old grease and any associated crap simply gets forced out the other side. It’s a nice touch, but something lazy people like myself probably won’t use.

Other features of the pedal include an oversized needles and a billion and one pin placement options. The XX pedal comes standard with a second set of toe plates (in a different colour) and a second set of pins. I’ll get to the pins later.

Both Versions of the pedal come with replaceable toe plates (spare plates are included with the XX), meaning that not only can you mix and match colour options, you can replace the parts of the pedal as they become beaten through abuse. I’ve been riding my set of pedals for 6 months now and so far these plates only have a few minor scuff marks, so I don’t think they will need replacing too often. This is a huge improvement to my old DMR V8’s that lost pins and chunks of pedal at the first sign of trouble.

The pedals weigh in at 578g per pair for the weight conscious out there.

How do the pedals feel???

Initially I hated them, the pins didn’t seem to grip and I felt like I was bouncing off the pedal all the time. A five minute pin replacement job to swap the stock pins for the longer ones and the pedal was transformed. The pedals also come with a set of screw type pins which seem to have even more flesh eating capability than the long pins, so as long at the standard short pins are swapped out, there is grip aplenty from these pedals.

The pedals aren’t cheap coming in at $220, however for this price you receive not only a quality pedal, you also get replacement toe plates and spare pins.
